Born March 6, 1806 at Cohnadatia Hall, near Durham.
She was the daughter of Edward Barrett Moulton Barrett, plantation owner in Jamaica, and Mary Graham-Clarke, who comes from a wealthy family of Newcastle and was the largest of the twelve children.
Her father chose to raise children in England and not in Jamaica, where he had financial interests.
The biographer Julia Markus says Elizabeth Barrett Browning believed she had African roots and her grandfather Charles Moulton.
He began with poetry while he was still a child.
Her father even saw, in 1820, to be issued in fifty copies an epic poem about the Battle of Marathon.
For girls of that time were very educated and trained at home.
He had very good knowledge of the Greek language.
In her teenage years, faced health problems and probably suffered from tuberculosis.
In 1826 published anonymously in «An Essay on Mind and Other Poems» (James Duncan, London).
With the abolition of slavery, which supported itself - as shown by the work of «The Runaway Slave at Pilgrims Point» (1849) - her family faced financial problems.
Her father sold his plantation and moved first to Sidmouth and afterwards in London.
